About

About me

I'm a controls and software engineer with 5+ years in automotive, EV battery, and process automation, across PLCs, robotics, machine vision, and electrical design. I also build in-house AI tools in Python and React that cut engineering design reviews from hours to minutes.

Part 01

Where I started

My foundation is hands-on. I studied Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology at Durham College, then completed a Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Mechatronics at the University of Windsor, graduating with Distinction. Along the way I earned a place on the Dean's Honor Roll and received the General Motors of Canada Automatic Award.

My first role, as a Controls Technologist at SIDAC Automated Systems, put me at the drawing board: I designed five control panels in AutoCAD Electrical, from component selection through thermal and power distribution calculations. That work taught me that every reliable machine starts with an electrical design that has been thought through.

Part 02

Learning the plant floor

From there I moved closer to production. At Vista Solutions I programmed, commissioned, and supported all of the vision cameras in a GM body shop, using Matrox Design Assistant to inspect sealer, adhesive, and welds, and I trained plant staff to troubleshoot them on their own.

At Onyx Engineering I broadened into process automation, designing PLC, HMI, and SCADA logic for three very different plants (a distillery, a food plant, and a wastewater facility) across Allen-Bradley, Emerson, Modicon, and PlantPAx platforms. I also drew schematics and panel layouts and answered field downtime calls. At S and T Controls I returned to automotive, developing and debugging Studio 5000 PLC and HMI programs for five body shop cells and verifying their wiring diagrams.

Part 03

What I focus on now

Since October 2023 I've been a Controls Engineer at General Motors in Warren, Michigan. I'm automating a manual final line with new-to-industry robotics that assemble doors, hoods, fenders, and their hinges. I've validated automation for EV battery mini-stack production at Factory ZERO and Orion Assembly, and I analyze production and downtime data, which helped cut recurring alarms by 50%.

In parallel, I saw how much engineering time went into manually reviewing wiring, power, and network designs. So I built a tool to do it. As the sole developer, I architected and shipped an AI platform on Python/FastAPI, React, and PostgreSQL/pgvector with an LLM and RAG assistant, YOLO and OCR drawing reading, and single sign-on, backed by more than 1,200 tests and deployed through Docker, CI/CD, and Kubernetes on Azure. It catches problems such as power supply overloads and missing safety devices in minutes.

Part 04

What I'm looking for

I'm pursuing an MSc in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Leeds (expected July 2027), and I'm looking for my next role as a Controls Engineer, Automation Engineer, Software Engineer, or Full-Stack Developer. The work I do best sits where physical systems and software meet: places where knowing how a line actually runs makes the software better, and good software makes the line run better.

I'm based in Troy, Michigan, and open to remote work and relocation.

01What I do

Areas of expertise

Six areas I've worked in professionally, each grounded in specific roles and projects.

PLC & Controls Engineering

I write, debug, and maintain PLC logic that runs production equipment. I've worked on body shop cells, final assembly, EV battery lines, and continuous process plants, using Allen-Bradley Studio 5000, RSLogix 500, Siemens TIA Portal, and STEP 7.

  • PLC logic for 5 body shop cells and 3 process plants
  • PLC logic updates for approved changes at GM
  • GuardLogix safety, EtherNet/IP, Profinet, DeviceNet

Robotics & Line Automation

I automate manual operations with robotics and integrate the equipment around them: bolt runners, feeders, forming tools, and cameras. Then I validate the result against throughput and quality targets.

  • New-to-industry robotics on a GM final line
  • Atlas Copco tightening, bolt and U-nut feeders, net form and pierce
  • EV battery mini-stack automation validation

AI & Full-Stack Software

I build production software end to end: Python/FastAPI backends, React frontends, PostgreSQL with pgvector, and LLM, RAG, and computer-vision features. I ship it with tests, containers, and CI/CD.

  • Sole developer of a GM-wide AI design-audit platform
  • LLM + RAG assistant, YOLO and OCR drawing reading
  • 1,200+ tests, Docker, Kubernetes on Azure, SSO

Machine Vision

I program and commission industrial vision systems that inspect quality on the line, and I make sure the people running the plant can support them.

  • All vision cameras in a GM body shop
  • Sealer, adhesive, and weld inspection in Matrox Design Assistant
  • Variation-reduction cameras for gap and flush

Electrical Design

I design control panels and electrical systems: schematics, panel layouts, component selection, and the thermal and power calculations that keep them safe and reliable.

  • 5 control panels designed in AutoCAD Electrical
  • Thermal and power distribution calculations
  • EPLAN Electric P8, wiring diagrams, commissioning

SCADA, HMI & Process Automation

I build the operator interfaces and supervisory systems that make automation visible and manageable, for discrete manufacturing and continuous process plants alike.

  • PLC, HMI, and SCADA for a distillery, food plant, and wastewater facility
  • FactoryTalk View, Ignition, WinCC, Cimplicity, ThinManager
  • Allen-Bradley, Emerson, Modicon, PlantPAx

02How I work

Working principles

Habits I've built over five-plus years of shipping automation and software that people depend on.

  1. Validate before you trust

Much of my work at GM is testing, validating, and auditing automation against throughput and quality targets. I bring the same habit to software: the design-audit platform ships through more than 1,200 tests.

  2. Let the data pick the problem

Instead of chasing whichever fault is loudest, I analyze production data and downtime reports to find recurring issues. That approach helped cut recurring alarms by 50%.

  3. Automate the tedious

When I saw engineers spend hours or days checking wiring, power, and network designs by hand, I built a tool that does it in minutes, so their time goes into engineering judgment.

  4. Leave people able to run it

A system is only as good as the team supporting it. I trained plant staff to troubleshoot the vision cameras I commissioned, and I track open issues to closure with leadership.
